The Hackulous team announced on their website that they are shutting down, consequently terminating two of the most popular applications known to the piracy world: Installous and AppSync. Why would such a world famous Cydia source just shut down without warning? Here’s what Installous had to say about the issue:
Goodnight, sweet prince.
We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down. After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We’re incredibly thankful for the support we’ve had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.
With lots of love,
Hackulous Team
That would be like the Facebook application being removed from the app store and Mark Zuckerberg coming out and apologizing that the reason he shut down was due to a stagnant community and it was too difficult to moderate. Nobody would believe that.
My guess is that Hackulous was suffering an internal dispute related to money that separated the team and couldn’t be shared with the public. The reason why I say this is the fact that there is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 6, and more specifically no jailbreak at all for the iPhone 5. App piracy is one of the two main reasons people jailbreak their Apple device. So with no jailbreaks available, the Hackulous team’s wallets are hurting worse than ever before. Disputes and rash decision making arise in a situation like financial stress, and that is what I think happened here. If you were an Installous user, it looks like you’re going to have to spend $0.99 on that app after all, and if you are a developer, I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear the news. Although, I’m almost more than certain that other developers will resume where Hackulous left off, and will likely release updated versions of Installous and AppSync.
